Third Annual International Drive Relay for Life Raises Money in Fight Against Cancer

ORLANDO, FL—The Third Annual International Drive Relay for Life this past weekend (May 21-22) at Pointe Orlando, took participants and visitors to the movies as it raised $27,000 to help in the fight against cancer.

This year, I-Drive partnered with Pointe Orlando and Regal Cinemas as each of the 16 participating teams developed a movie theme. Featured movies included Twilight: New Moon, Gone with the Wind, Toy Story, Top Gun, Star Wars, Pretty in Pink, Sideways, Point Break, Ultimate Breakers, Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, Castaway, Wizard of Oz.

As the national fund-raising event of the American Cancer Society, this unique, fun-filled day- and-a- half offers everyone in the community an opportunity to participate in the fight against cancer. I-Drive Relay teams are formed from businesses, families, churches, friends and service organizations, all to support the American Cancer Society’s mission: eliminating cancer as a major health problem, saving lives and diminishing suffering from the disease. During the event, team members take turns walking around the track. Each participant is encouraged to raise at least $100.

As the I-Drive District’s team captain this year, Luann Brooks, executive director of the I-Drive Master Transit and Improvement District, acknowledged the support from sponsors and more than 170 participants.

“We realize that with the economic climate, this has been a difficult year to ask for donations and we are pleased that contributors have reached deep into their pockets to play a role in fighting a disease that impacts all of us on some level. It is fitting that International Drive, a world famous family vacation destination, should be one of the area’s locations for Relay for Life.”

The I-Drive Relay for Life has raised over $101,000, combined, from its 2008, 2009 and 2010 events.
